This piece is a tribute to the artistry of English shakuhachi player Joseph Browning. Joseph’s resolute, highly concentrated performances of traditional Japanese shakuhachi repertoire, and his gentle, articulate manner have impressed me since I first him in York nearly five years ago. Joseph’s other area of expertise is the gamelan music of central Java, and the structure of Gendhing for Jospeh Browning is based on that of Gendhing Bandhilori – a piece Joseph and I performed often in York’s Gamelan Sekar Petak. The piece combines this structure with an approach to harmony informed both by my own (facile) understanding of certain tendencies in traditional Japanese shakuhachi repertoire, and long-standing preoccupations with harmonic-series harmony.
